Homeless, Housing Instability and Mental Health |
May is Mental Health Awareness month. RecoveryWorks (RW) is not only committed to addressing the root causes of homelessness, including poverty and a lack of access to affordable housing, we are also committed to the causes of poor social and emotional health for our unhoused guests. Almost without exception, our guests have experienced significant trauma and continue to be victimized on the streets.
A large part of our efforts at RecoveryWorks is to “invite” guests to consider moving from a posture of surviving to one of thriving. RecoveryWorks employs an onsite Licensed Professional Counselor, Jeff Citro, M.A., M.Div., LPC, to provide traditional talk therapy as well as Neurofeedback, a non-invasive, non-medical brain training method to improve emotional and physiological regulation. RecoveryWorks also hosts a Jefferson Center for Mental Health therapist every Monday. Luke Walker provides psychotherapy and refers guests to the plethora of services offered by Jefferson Center. Additionally, RW’s onsite case managers provide a supportive environment to address a myriad of needs within a supportive and caring environment. RW also refers to WellPower’s Therapy Direct Program which provides same day therapy with either a therapist or Peer Support Specialist. Finally, RecoveryWorks partners with community providers and volunteers to provide emotional support groups each day at our Navigation Center (8000 West Colfax Avenue) that address spirituality, recovery, emotional wellness, QiGong, or art therapy.

RecoveryWorks’ Board of Directors Working for Good |
Liz Hernandez, Esq. and Colleen Osborne at The Action Center’s fundraising event May 2024 |
RecoveryWorks’ board of directors is a committed group of community members that serve as a strategic thought partner on growth, ensures we are accountable to the community and funders, and helps us chart a path for our organization’s future. Recently, we welcomed Dr. Elizabeth Moolenaar to our board. Dr. Moolenaar teaches in the Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice Department at Regis University. She has held previous teaching positions at the Colorado School of Mines, the University of Bremen in Germany, and the Senior Academy at the University of Groningen. She also serves as a commissioner on the Lakewood Advisory Commission for the City Council of Lakewood. Welcome, Dr. Moolenaar.
Also, we welcomed a new board president to RecoveryWorks. Colleen Osborne, Wheat Ridge resident, stepped into this role in April. She has a background in Human Resources, Training and Development and Leadership Development. Colleen currently works as a personal growth and leadership coach and teaches mindfulness and resilience for personal and leadership development. She has served on our board for two years and has lived in Wheat Ridge for 23 years. “I decided to serve on the RecoveryWorks’ board because it is an opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of a mission I care deeply about….I want to be part (of) creating community around recovery.”
Finally, our deepest gratitude to Liz Hernandez, Esq., who will rotate out of the Board Chair position, and will remain on as a board member. We appreciate her leadership during an incredible time of growth for RecoveryWorks.
To learn more about serving on our board, please contact Colleen Osborne, RecoveryWorks’ Board President, at [email protected].

RecoveryWorks Thanks You for Your Support |
A huge thank you to everyone who donated or volunteered in relation to our Spring Into Action: Help Bridge the Housing Gap virtual peer-to-peer fundraising campaign. We raised $4,356! Your support helped us provide Bridge Housing guests with move-in necessities such as kitchen, bath, and bedroom supplies and a stocked fridge to help them settle into their permanent residence. We also want to extend our deepest appreciation to our Peer Fundraisers. They worked tirelessly to activate their networks to donate. The peer fundraisers now get entered into a drawing to win a $600 Southwest Airline travel voucher. Good luck!

RecoveryWorks Gets New Logo |
Over the past year, RecoveryWorks has experienced incredible expansion that includes new services, new facilities, and expanded staff. Committed to creating a comprehensive rehousing infrastructure in Jefferson County that is person-centered, trauma-informed and evidence-based, RecoveryWorks has designed a new logo. Staff, board members and a Lakewood designer worked hard to create an image that captures our energy and vision for a society where community and recovery are possible and homelessness is rare, brief and a one-time occurrence. We hope you like our new look!

Support RecoveryWorks By Making a Qualified Charitable Distribution
There is a very easy way to support RecoveryWorks! Consider making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to us. A QCD allows individuals who are 70 ½ years or older to donate to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking a required minimum distribution. “It was an easy decision for me to donate to Recovery Works. I admire the work they do everyday for people in my community. When my financial advisor told me that my investment company could handle all the paperwork and send the amount I wanted to give directly to Recovery Works, I was sold. It’s nice to know that the money is sent automatically, on a regular schedule with a tax break, and I don’t have to worry that I might forget to send it.” Steve Longsdorf, long-time RecoveryWorks supporter. For more information, contact Molly Hanson, Recovery Works’ Development and Communications Director, at [email protected].
